Development of DiffPatch started today at 5:00 am. Early, I know. Inspiration for this project came from an ever-improving content management system being developed by Innovata, the software division of AstareGlobe. As of now, editing comments, blog posts, and documents leave no trace of any previous versions, making administration of these objects very difficult in the event of vandalism or blanking, or even figuring out what's changed since the earlier versions of those objects. A proposed solution is to have every previous version of an object available for administrators and other staff members to view as well as revert to in the event of an undesirable change.
DiffPatch includes back-end code for determining the differences between two versions of a set of text (called a diff) and generating a set of instructions to transform one version to the other (called a patch). It also includes a front-end that allows users to compare files and see the differences side-by-side.
A prototype is now complete after approximately 48 hours from the start of development. The back-end code is undergoing review and optimization, and believe me, it needs it.
The back-end code for DiffPatch will be available to the general public under one of the AstareGlobe Innovata source code licenses. The prototype will be available under a software license.
